Many people will change their beauty routine with the season in order to accommodate different temperatures or even humidity levels. Similarly, it’s important for you to adjust your routine if you are in a polluted area.

The pollutants in the air can impact you more than you might expect and you should add a few extra steps to your beauty routine.

Exfoliate Your Skin

In polluted areas, there are more irritants in the air. You may not even notice a difference, but your skin certainly does. These irritants and pollutants can clog up your pores and negatively affect the health of your skin. In order to counter this, you need to regularly exfoliate your skin.

Exfoliating helps you clean your skin deeper than a regular wash would. It helps to unclog your pores and remove all the pollutants you’re exposed to. How often you exfoliate will depend on your skin type. For most people, it’s recommended that you exfoliate 1 or 2 times a week. However, some skin types can handle daily exfoliation.

Closer Attention to Your Hair

In addition to your skin, your hair can be heavily impacted by pollutants. Exposure to the pollutants in the air can cause your hair to dry out and become more brittle. It’s also possible for pollutants to collect on your hair and weigh it down, causing damage or even discoloration. You need to take extra care when it comes to your hair.

Using a shampoo that is designed to deep clean your hair can help remove any lingering pollutants. Conditioner provides protection for your hair in a polluted environment. It will also add more moisture back to your hair. If you know there are a lot of pollutants in your area, then you should decrease the amount of product you use in your hair. The more you put on your hair, the easier it is for pollutants to collect on it.

Moisturize Often

Moisturizer is partially used to keep your skin, hair, etc. hydrated. However, it also forms a protective barrier. Lotion and other moisturizers can actually keep irritants from getting to your skin. You will experience fewer problems due to the pollution in your area. Make sure you moisturize your skin after you shower, after washing your face, before you go to bed, and several times throughout the day. The more you moisturize, the more protected your skin will be.

Pollution has many negative effects on both the environment and your own body. In order to protect yourself, you need to adjust your current routine. Making a few extra changes can help you have healthier skin, hair, and more.
