How to Boost Your Immune System During the Winter

In the wintertime, it’s more common for people to get sick. Lower temperatures reduce your body’s ability to fight off infections and you need to be more vigilant in order to stay healthy. 

As the winter weather sets in, you should give your immune system a boost. 

Stay Physically Active 

Being physically active benefits your body in many ways. It increases the strength of your bones and muscles, aids in weight loss, and improves the health of your heart. It also is a part of improving your immune system. 

When you exercise, it puts your body under small amounts of stress and your immune system has to repair this. The more you exercise, the more your immune system has to work, and the better it will be at preventing sickness. In the winter, you may be less motivated to move and work out, but it’s important to keep up with your physical activity. 

Get the Proper Nutrients 

Your diet plays a big role in keeping you healthy and preventing sickness. You need to make sure you are eating a diet that is high in vitamins. The best way to do this is by eating lots of fruits and vegetables. 

Not all fruits and vegetables will have the same nutrients, so you need to eat a variety. Strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries are all high in vitamin C. Potassium is found in bananas, cantaloupe, and spinach. Avocados, nuts, and seeds give you vitamin A. You can find calcium in a lot of dark leafy greens. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables will give you the nutrients your body needs in order to function well and fight off sickness. 

Get Plenty of Sleep

The incredible thing about sleep is it can impact nearly every aspect of your health. Getting enough sleep can improve weight loss, positively affect your mental health, and lower your stress levels. A lack of sleep can be detrimental to your immune system. If you want to stay healthy this winter, you need to be getting plenty of sleep so your immune system can function well. On average, you should be getting 7-9 hours of sleep each night. The quality of your sleep also matters. For the best sleep, your room should be cool, dark, and quiet. 

Establishing a healthy nighttime routine can help prepare you for sleep. Your immune system is constantly fighting to keep you healthy all throughout the year. During the winter, I have to work even harder. Do your body good and give your immune system a boost this winter.
