Tell us a little about yourself and what you do.
I help to educate individuals and couples on how to create and sustain healthy long-lasting relationships. Because we don’t often get an education on relationships and/or marriage, I believe it is of critical importance to educate as many people as possible so maybe we can decrease the divorce rate and the oftentimes negative and traumatic impact it can have on families, friends and those around the divorcing couple. With the proper tools and techniques, I believe that when 2 people are committed to making a relationship work, they can certainly do so!

Why are you so passionate about healthy relationships?
Great question! It has been said that we teach most what we need to learn. I recall as a child hearing my parents ‘bicker’ a lot and I would feel stressed by this. Consequently, whenever I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, (I may not have had the words to say I want to be a relationship expert and psychotherapist),  I would say I wanted to help people get along better. As a child, I couldn’t understand why anyone would want to go into any other field because I thought that if people can’t get along with each other, then that makes everything else in life much more difficult. Years later, I got married and after a 17-year marriage, that I did all I could to make work, I chose to get a divorced-a painstaking but good decision. Having had these personal experiences, I thought who better than to help people with relationships than someone who knows the struggles firsthand. My divorce has ironically made me a more effective therapist as I know what it’s like to fight for a marriage and I know how to walk away amicably. Oh, and my parents are still married and almost at the 60-year mark!

Tell us about a professional challenge and how you overcame it.
While being a psychotherapist has many challenges, to begin with, being a solo entrepreneur does too, especially while going through a divorce with two young kids at the time. One of the most challenging parts of this time in my life was my concern for how my personal struggles would impact my professional reputation and practice. I believe my purpose in life is to educate as many people as possible about creating and sustaining healthy and fulfilling relationships.

What’s next for you?
So much!! Currently, I am working on creating online courses, the first one I am offering will be on Your Relationship with Yourself, which is the most important relationship we will ever have! The second one will be for couples who are about to get married (dating or engaged) to help them be as prepared as possible!
Next, I am offering a Couples Retreat Weekend. Details to follow but it will be for committed or married couples at any stage of their relationship-those who want to enhance what is already working and those who are seriously struggling. It will be a 2-day retreat where couples will walk away feeling more connected and renewed.
Last, I am writing a book! I’ve always wanted to write a book and after writing articles and a monthly column in a local paper (The Today Paper, Monmouth County, New Jersey) for over 20 years, it’s definitely time for a book! Be on the lookout for more information.
