Black Girls Right was specifically created to encourage and motivate women of color to write. Black Girls Right is a safe space where women of color can have open, raw, conversations. No filter, no cut cards, and no judgment. Black Girls Right is a community where women can feel support and heard. It is our mission to let women of color know that our feelings are true, valid, and honorable.
LM: Tell me a little bit about yourself.
CR: I am from Baltimore, MD. I am a full-time Outreach Worker Supervisor. My team helps address social barriers for residents of Baltimore City. I am a single parent of a 14-year-old growing Black Girl! I am currently in the process of healing, learning myself again, and reclaiming my power!
LM: Tell us about your business.
CR: Black Girls Right is an online journal where I share some of my personal experiences and/or thoughts. I welcome other Black Women to share their experiences with me and interact with me in the comment sections! I definitely talk back and would LOVE to hear from other women!
I also have a blank-lined journal set available for purchase on my website as well! Every Sunday I share a journal prompt of the week. I host a Sip and Share on IG Live every Saturday at 9 am. During this time we reflect on the week’s journal prompt. On Sundays, I host “Stuff talking Sundays” on zoom where we have a co-ed conversation about different topics.

LM: What prompted you to start your business?
CR: I started my business after a heartbreak in December of 2019. I just wanted to WRITE! I needed to get my feelings out and process them. I was seeking to speak to other women who were familiar with similar situations. I needed to feel everything I was feeling and for it to be “OK”. I wanted to be transparent, I wanted to be angry when I needed, sad, happy, and confused without judgment. I needed a support system outside of my friends. So I birthed Black Girls Right.
LM: Have you always aspired to be an entrepreneur? Why or why not?
CR: I have NEVER aspired to become an entrepreneur. I am very introverted and being the face behind a brand was never in my plans. But, when it’s your purpose God will align you.
LM: What’s the best part of being an entrepreneur?
CR: Although I’m very new to this, so far the best part of being an entrepreneur for me has been to literally do what I want. I am not restricted by rules or any guidelines. I make the decision, I can work when I want or don’t when I don’t feel like it. I run things on MY terms and MY terms only!
LM: What’s the worst part of being an entrepreneur?
CR: So far the “worst” part of being an entrepreneur has been not meeting my sales goals during my first month. I set a goal and didn’t meet it. However, I understand that I need to focus on marketing and advertising more.
LM: Who’s your inspiration? Why?
CR: My grandparents are my biggest inspiration. They push me and encourage me to always do my best. All of my life they have carried the weight of making sure our family was good. I strive to make them proud and make sure they are good!
LM: List some of your greatest achievements
CR: My greatest achievement thus far has been being a single parent! That is a struggle in itself BUT I’M DOING IT! Becoming a Supervisor over a city-funded grant program is very rewarding. Lastly, being a part of my FIRST EVENT “From Paper to Profit”!
LM: Name a time when things didn’t go right. What happened and how did you get past it?
CR: Recently I had 10 ceramic mugs available for purchase. They were supposed to come packaged and everything. All I had to do was wrap them. However, they didn’t come wrapped, packaged, or anything. I had to order boxes, bubble wrap, and wrapping to ship the product. While I was able to do this, this wasn’t the agreement and it wasn’t in my plans. However, I DID it and they ALL SOLD OUT!
LM: Where do you see your business in 3 years?
CR: I am hoping to have a guided journal published and hosting my own events to empower Black Women.
LM: What advice would you give a new entrepreneur?
CR: Be authentic, stand in your truth and remember why you started.
