In a previous post, I talked about what qualities you should look for when hiring an event planner. Below are some questions to ask a potential hire. You want to be clear about what the planner offers and what services you are paying for.
What is your area of expertise?
To make sure they are a good fit for your event, you must find out what they are good at. If you are planning a wedding, you may not want to hire someone who has never planned a wedding before or if their expertise is in corporate events. It’s not to say that they can’t do it but the knowledge level for weddings may be limited.
What services do you offer?
Some event planners are not full-service, meaning they don’t offer any services outside of actual planning and execution. To be clear, you must ask what services they offer to their clients. If decor and design is a need, make sure you ask the planner if they offer that or if they outsource the service.
What is included in your fee?
You not only need to know how much the fee is but what it is included in that fee. Does it include travel time locally? Is there an additional charge for decor setup or design services? You will need to know exactly what you are paying for.
Do you have a contract?
All event professionals should operate with a contract. A contract is essential for doing business because it provides protection for both parties. Be sure to read the fine print and ask any additional questions about things that may be unclear. Make sure you are clear about their refund and cancellation policy.

Do you work solo or do you have a team?
You must know who you are working with. If your event planner works alone but outsources event help you will need to know who will be the point of contact at any given moment especially on the day of the event. Find out if you will meet the event staff whether in-house or outsourced and if you will need their contact information for the day of the event.
Be sure to interview several different planners before you decide on one. You want to make the best choice for yourself and the success of your event.
